Reporting a wrong time
Please include
- the city selected in the app;
- the calculation method in use;
- the date concerned;
- the time the app showed;
- the time you expected, and where it comes from.
Without those five, a discrepancy cannot be reproduced: the same coordinates and the same method always give the same result.
About the times
The times shown are computed astronomically, according to the calculation method you selected. They may differ from those of a mosque or a local authority, whose practice takes precedence.
If your reference times differ by a few minutes, the app lets you adjust each prayer independently, in minutes. That is the intended way to line up with your mosque without changing method.
Frequently asked
Why doesn't the app detect my location?
By design. AWAS uses neither GPS nor any location permission: you pick your city, and the calculation starts from its coordinates. That is also what lets the app ask for no access to where you are.
How do I add a city that isn't in the list?
Create a custom place and enter its coordinates. North and east are positive, south and west negative: Paris is 48.8566 and 2.3522; Buenos Aires is −34.6037 and −58.3816.
Enter the elevation and the time zone as well: the time zone is not inferred from the coordinates — you choose it.
Which calculation method should I choose?
The one your mosque uses. Failing that, the one customary in your country. Differences between methods come mostly from the angles chosen for Fajr and Isha; the other times barely move from one method to the next.
Why are some times unavailable at high latitudes?
Because the corresponding astronomical event does not occur that day: at some latitudes and times of year, the sun never sinks far enough below the horizon to reach the Fajr or Isha angle.
The app says so rather than showing an arbitrary value. A time produced by convention is still a convention; better to choose that convention knowingly, with your mosque.
My alerts don't fire, or arrive late
First check that notifications are allowed for AWAS in the Android settings. If they arrive late, battery saving is the usual cause: allow exact alarms for AWAS, and exclude the app from battery optimisation.
Alerts are silent by design. Vibration is a separate setting inside the app.
Does the app work without a connection?
Yes, entirely. The calculation, the city list and the calendar times are all produced on the device. AWAS makes no network requests, and has no server to reach.
